I’ve always loved Of Montreal from afar. I wouldn’t say I’m a huge fan, but every time I listen to them I thoroughly enjoy the experience. That being said, it’s been a number of years, probably since the last time they rolled through town, that I took a good, hard listen. They’ve always been weird, but I think it’s safe to say that they’re diving further into the avant-garde with their latest release, the 4-song EP, "Rune Husk." The opening track, “Internecine Larks,” is a pop-experimental jazzy number that avoids all pretense of groove for what seems like forever. It takes about 3-plus minutes for them to get into the song, but it’s totally worth it. It reminds me a little of "Sgt. Pepper’s" as far as whimsy goes, but it’s more of a jaded whimsy that is a sign of the times.

The song “Stag to the Stable” is still full-on, '60s psychedelic pop, but the modern touches definitely give it its own vibe. I think it’s safe to say that they’ve come a long way from that Outback Steakhouse commercial from a decade ago, which isn’t all that surprising. They showed promise then, and they continue to intrigue and excite. If you’re looking for some real good workin’ music, put this EP on and let it take you out of your cubicle for 20 or so minutes; at least until lunchtime.

Check them out Tuesday, when they play along with local French-pop favorites Pearl & The Oysters, at High Dive starting at 8 p.m.
