Council on Aging (COA) has served seniors in St. Johns County for over 45 years. Despite its longevity, COA is frequently mistaken for a St. Johns County government agency when it is actually a private, nonprofit organization. Therefore, its success relies in large part upon the financial and volunteer support of the community.

On Sunday, Aug. 25, COA will embark upon its largest fundraiser of the year, its 16th annual gala — “Treasures on the Matanzas” — which will take place at River House. The gala is the fundraising event’s kick-off, followed the next day by its championship golf tournament at Slammer & Squire, World Golf Village.

Joanne Basden has been volunteering on the gala auction planning committee for several years, working with a team of volunteers to procure auction items from local businesses and individuals. The team also runs the silent auction at the event.

“It’s gratifying to tackle this project for an organization that does so much good in the community,” Basden said. “The end result is a beautiful, fun event with amazing items for auction.”

In addition to the silent auction, the gala will feature dinner by Chef’s Garden; an open bar with beer and wine; dessert; and dancing to the live music of the Frank Saffi Band.

Tickets are $100 per person and are available at www.coasjc.org or by calling 904-209-3700.
