Star gazing party

Enjoy an evening under the stars with the Ancient City Astronomy Club of St. Augustine at TrailMark’s Star Gazing Party on Saturday, Sept. 7. Free and fun for everyone, the event takes place from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the nature-first community of TrailMark in St. Johns County, located just 20 minutes south of Jacksonville.

The Ancient City Astronomy Club is a community of amateur astronomy enthusiasts promoting interest in the heavens and beyond. Club members will have telescopes available for a close-up view of the moon, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and many other celestial objects.

Protecting plants from pests

The Ixia Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will hold its monthly general meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Willowbranch Library. This month’s featured speaker is Lisa Hassell Tyler, from the Florida Department of Agriculture’s Division of Plant Industry.

Tyler will discuss how the agency looks for harmful pests and disease, inspects questionable products and scrutinizes “high-risk” items coming into the state.

Free and open to the public, the meeting begins at 6 p.m. with a social hour, refreshments and a short business meeting. The library is located at 2875 Park St., Jacksonville. More information can be found online at Ixia.fnpschapters.org.

Fighting hunger with NEFAR

The Community Affairs Task Force of the Northeast Florida Association of Realtors has once again joined forces with HungerFight for its third annual meal-packing event, to be held on Thursday, Sept. 19, at Morocco Shrine Auditorium.

The organization is seeking donations and hundreds of volunteers to help pack 100,000 meals for local hungry families. A fundraising goal of $25,000 has been set to purchase food for the meals prior to the event.

Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. and the event should conclude around 1 p.m. Water and sodas will be provided throughout the day, followed by a pizza lunch once all meals are packed.

Clay plant sale rescheduled

Get everything you need for fall planting during the fifth annual Plant Sale & Garden Celebration, hosted by Clay County Master Gardeners, now scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Highlights include a variety of free workshops, such as learning to propagate your favorite plants, tips for succulents, growing plants without soil, hydroponic gardening and creating a dazzling display of daylilies. Kids will also enjoy learning to create milk-carton birdfeeders or soda bottle planters.

On sale will be thousands of plants for every condition, from dry to moist and from sun to shade. Master Gardener volunteers will be available to help you make your selections, answer your plant questions and share timely gardening publications. Live music, food trucks and craft vendors will also be on hand.

The event takes place at the UF/IFAS Clay County Extension Office, 2463 State Road 16 in Green Cove Springs. Call (904) 284-6355 with questions.

Realtors raffle for charity

Davidson Realty has kicked off its annual raffle contest to benefit St. Augustine Youth Services, Investing in Kids and Builders Care. Raffle packages include The Players #17 Chalet, Cooler & Cocktails and a Beretta A400 Xcel 12-gauge competition shotgun.

Suggested minimum donations for the first two raffles are one ticket for $10 or 15 tickets for $100. For the shotgun raffle, suggested donations are one ticket for $20 and six tickets for $100.

Raffle winners will be announced at the 4th annual Clay Day event at Jacksonville Clay Target Sports on Oct. 24, and winners are not required to be present to win.
