Jason Navarro of 3394 Patterson Heights, Haines City, died of his injuries at Heart of Florida Medical Center.
HAINES CITY — An 18-year-old Ridge Community High School student died in a crash that left him trapped in a Nissan 350Z about 8 p.m. Friday on U.S. 27 near U.S. 17/92.
Jason Navarro of 3394 Patterson Heights, Haines City, died of his injuries at Heart of Florida Medical Center, the Haines City Police Department reported.
According to police, Navarro's car was traveling south of U.S 27 when he apparently lost control of the Nissan. The car spun out of control, went across the median, striking several crape myrtle trees before entering U.S. 27 North.
The Nissan was then struck by an Acura MDX driven by Mario Rodriguez, 47, of Miami. He was not seriously injured.
Navarro, who was wearing his seat belt, was trapped inside the car and had to be extricated, with both Haines City Fire Department and Polk County Fire Rescue on the scene.
The cause of the crash is under investigation but weather may have been a factor because it was raining and the road was wet, police said.
