BARTOW — Hurricane Irma wasn’t the primary source of missing property for one Bartow family who had taken relatives in for the storm.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Robert Campbell, 16, of Pinellas County, was arrested Tuesday on charges of stealing from family members he was staying with during the storm. Campbell was charged with grand theft, grand theft auto and felony violation of probation.
Campbell, who has 12 prior cases of violating probation on various charges in Pinellas County, was staying with family members in Polk County overnight Monday. According to deputies, when one family member woke up on Tuesday morning, she noticed her purse, keys, car and money were missing before finding a note from Campbell saying he was sorry.
Deputies were able to locate the car abandoned in the area of Alturas Babson Park Cutoff Road before 9 a.m. Residents told the Sheriff’s Office that they saw Campbell running away from the car. K-9 units eventually tracked Campbell, who was arrested without incident.
Campbell was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center in Bartow.
