A minivan stolen Monday morning from a cremation company in Arlington was found abandoned Tuesday about four miles away at an Advance Auto Parts store at Fort Caroline and Merrill roads, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
The body of a man strapped to a cot in a body bag in the Honda Odyssey was still inside, police said.
The minivan driver told officers he had collected the body from UF Health Jacksonville and returned to Affordable Cremation Solutions about 11:30 a.m., then walked into the business to drop off paperwork, according to the original police report. He said the doors were unlocked and the engine running. When he walked back outside, he saw it being driven away.
Police issued a radio alert and numerous patrol units searched the area, along with a police helicopter, but to no avail.
The Sheriff's Office issued an alert for the van, including its license plate tag, and then said someone saw it parked in the 9500 block of Merrill Road early Tuesday afternoon.
