LEESBURG – Christian churches around the world marked the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday. Lent is the season of atonement leading up to the most sacred day on the Christian calendar, Easter. At St. Paul Community Church in Leesburg, priests celebrated mass and marked the foreheads of worshipers to signify the dust from which God made us. Ashes also symbolize the grief worshipers feel for having sinned against God. As the ashes are applied, the priest speaks the words, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."
