Bird count

The 21st annual Great Backyard Bird Count will take place Friday through Monday all over Marion County. Bird enthusiasts of all ages should outside and count the number and species of birds they see for a time of 15 minutes and then input the data at birdcount.org. Participants can do this as frequently as they wish over the four days.

Related events include:

• Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Silver Springs State Park, 5656 E Silver Springs Blvd., birding by kayak, rent one or bring your own; $6 fee includes all-day admission to the park.

• Saturday, 9 a.m., Tuscawilla Park, 829 NE Sanchez Ave., Ocala, guided bird walk.

• Monday, 9 and 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Silver Springs State Park, Marion Audubon Society members will spend the day at the park. Entry fee is $2 per person.

Park dedication

A dedication ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Friday for Jim Kirk Park, at the playground in the 2900 block of Northeast Ninth Street, Ocala. According to a city of Ocala news release, Kirk was an Ocala City Councilman in the 1960s and '70s and later was mayor for three terms. He owned the WMOP and WFUZ radio stations. He purchased what is now the Marion Theater and gifted the building to the city and was a driving force behind the Appleton Museum of Art. Kirk died in 2015 at age 88. Call 368-5517.

History Day Fair

The county's first History Day Fair will take place 3-6 p.m. Friday at Horizon Academy, 365 Marion Oaks Drive, Ocala. Local school students chose historical topics related to the theme of “Conflict and Compromise” and conducted research. They will present work via a written paper, visual exhibit, arts performance, documentary or website. Those who place will advance to state competition. Free. Pancake fundraiser

Four authors
