Thomas Brennan Phillips, 31, was charged with aggravated battery.

A Gainesville man was arrested Monday after sheriff's deputies say he hit another man in the head with a toy that launches tennis balls for dogs to chase.

Thomas Brennan Phillips, 31, hit the other man at Lake Crossing Apartments, 4000 NW 51st St., according to an Alachua County Sheriff's Office report.

The 33-year-old pet owner told deputies that when he was walking his dog in an area for dogs at the apartment complex, Phillips’ dog attacked his dog.

He said his dog was initially on a leash, but as he tried to separate the two dogs, it became unleashed.

When he flung the leash at Phillips’ dog, trying to get it to let go of his pet, Phillips ran over and struck him with the tennis ball launcher, which is about 3 feet long, the report says.

The report says the injured man had swelling, redness and a cut consistent with being struck in the face with a tennis ball launcher.

Phillips was arrested on an aggravated battery charge and held in the Alachua County jail.
