The College of Central Florida baseball team completed its second-consecutive conference sweep after defeating Seminole State College 13-7 on Monday afternoon at Goodlett Field. With the win, the Patriots are now 6-0 in conference play, 17-6-1 overall, and winners of eight straight.
The Patriot offense exploded in the first four innings, scoring four in the first inning, five in the second and four more in the fourth, thanks in part to back-to-back home runs from Christian Smallwood, including a grand glam. Smallwood finished the day going 5-for-6 with eight RBIs and two home runs. In the series, Smallwood was 9-for-14 at the plate with 14 RBIs and three home runs.
Yorvis Torrealba went 3-for-4 from the leadoff position with a RBI and three runs scored, while Luis Medina and Ricky Presno also drove in one run each. Medina currently leads the state in RBIs (39) and home runs (11).
Nick Geller got the start on the mound, allowing five earned runs on six hits in four innings. Two pitchers later, sophomore righty Josh Harper came in to throw 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just three hits, to record his third win of the season. Harper has been a key contributor out of the bullpen for the Patriots this season, recording a 1.74 ERA in nine games.
CF will begin its next conference series on Wednesday when the Patriots travel to Florida State College at Jacksonville. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
