Sarasota-Manatee politicians react to President Trump's firing of secretary of state.

U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan said President Donald Trump’s decision to fire Secretary of State Rex Tillerson Tuesday was “not entirely surprising.”

“Tillerson was well respected but he never seemed to be on sound footing with the president,” Buchanan, R-Longboat Key, said in a statement.

Buchanan and U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney, an Okeechobee Republican whose district includes southern Sarasota County, both praised CIA Director Mike Pompeo as Trump's chosen replacement for Tillerson.

“I worked with Mike Pompeo in the House,” Rooney tweeted. “Mike is a superb pick for our next Secretary of State and a great American. I know he will serve our country well.”

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio said Pompeo has "unique qualifications" as a former Army officer and congressman who now serves as CIA director.

"I will enthusiastically support his nomination and am hopeful he can be confirmed quickly,” Rubio said.

Sarasota state Rep. Joe Gruters, who co-chaired Trump’s presidential campaign in Florida and serves as Sarasota GOP chair, praised Tillerson but said the president is doing what he thinks is best for the country.

“America was lucky to have Tillerson, but sometimes your time’s up.” Gruters said. “You elect the president to make decisions.”

Trump said Tuesday that he and Tillerson "disagree on things" and cited the Iran nuclear deal as one example. The two men reportedly have been at odds for months. NBC News reported that Tillerson called Trump a "moron" after a meeting in July.
