Jeremy Joseph Whitehead was arrested on attempted homicide and other charges.

A Gainesville man was arrested Tuesday after police say he invaded an apartment in December and shot a man in the chest.

Jeremy Joseph Whitehead, 24, had been told by a separate witness that a man at Sundowne Apartments had cannabis, according to a sworn complaint affidavit filed by the Gainesville Police Department.

The witness said he tried to convince Whitehead not to attempt a robbery there.

On Dec. 2, the man at the apartment told Whitehead he did not have the drugs, but Whitehead entered anyway while pointing a gun at him, the complaint says.

Another man there told Whitehead to leave, police say, and Whitehead shot him in the chest. He was later taken to UF Health Shands and survived.

Afterward, police say, the first witness said Whitehead told him he had shot the man.

Whitehead faces charges of attempted homicide, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and home invasion with a firearm.

He was being held in the Alachua County jail in lieu of $1.6 million bond.
