Marquis Harris struck Jaqavies Rivers in the head with a handgun, which fired and killed him.

A jury found an Orlando man guilty in the shooting death of a 22-year-old in North Port last year.

According to a news release from the office of Ed Brodsky, State Attorney for the 12th Judicial Circuit, Marquis Harris, 27, was convicted of manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a felon after a trial that ended April 13.

On Sept. 25, Harris struck Jaqavies Rivers, 22, twice on the head with a handgun at a home in the 2400 block of Roxbury Circle. On the second strike, the gun fired, killing Rivers instantly.

Harris fled the scene, disposed of the handgun at his brother's house and then was driven to Orlando in an attempt to set up an alibi.

A resident of the home where the shooting occurred, Michael Hendricks Jr., 42, called police to report what happened.

Harris is scheduled to be sentenced in July.

Hendricks is charged with accessory to the crime.
