The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has charged Thomas Dustin White, 31, of Sarasota with kidnapping and carjacking after an incident that took place in the Lowe's parking lot on Fruitville Road around 5 p.m. Saturday.
According to deputies, the owner of a 2017 Chrysler 300 said he was loading mulch into the trunk while his 9-year-old daughter waited in the back seat. White got into the front seat of the car and ordered the girl to get out. After she protested that it was her dad's car, he began driving away with the girl still in the back seat. The girl was able to jump out of the moving car onto the pavement before it exited the parking lot.
Deputies located the Chrysler and attempted to stop the car, but White fled. During the pursuit, the Chrysler ran over tire-deflating devices placed by deputies and came to a stop at the intersection of Bee Ridge Road and Cattlemen Road. Deputies saw White run from the car into the Chili's restaurant and followed him on foot, eventually apprehending him as he attempted to flee out the front door of the restaurant, according to the Sheriff's Office.
