One of my all-time favorite children's stories was written by Dr. Seuss and printed in 1940. The story was titled "Horton Hatches the Egg" and describes the ordeals endured by Horton the elephant who was tricked into sitting on a birds nest while its mother, Mazie, permanently flies south to Florida leaving Horton to hatch the egg. Horton endures many hardships including inclement weather and ridicule during his nesting responsibility often stating: "I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful, one hundred percent!"
It is ironic that the elephant is the symbol for the Republican Party and President Trump, like Horton, has stated a similar promise: "I meant what I said, and said what I meant!" The litany of Trump's campaign promises being kept and coming to fruition has amazed many Americans who had become numb to campaign promises rarely being kept. Just as observers were amazed to see an Elephant sitting on a nest in a tree, we witnessed all the talking media heads amazed that Trump was now sitting on the nest of the presidency and totally dedicated to fulfilling his promises.
Trump, like Horton, constantly endures ridicule but both remained steadfast to their commitments. So, when Trump promised to move our embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, he did. Other presidents promised, but none followed through. The list of Trump's accomplishments would far exceed this column space but just looking at some of the highlights are more than impressive. The first major tax reform in 30 years has has amazing benefits, such as the lowest black and hispanic unemployment rate in history, 14 states also re aching their lowest unemployment in history and having 300,000 manufacturing jobs created after being told by President Obama that these jobs were not coming back.Jobless claims reached the lowest level in 45 years and the Dow Jones Industrial average hit record highs more than 80 times and surpassed 26,000 for the first time in history!
Trump said that most all of our trade deals were terribly negotiated and he would address the bleeding of massive trade deficits, loss of jobs and moving from free trade to fair trade. In 1992, when the North American Trade Agreement was a hot political issue in America, Bill Clinton promised that NAFTA would generate an increase in high paying jobs and reduce illegal immigration. Ross Perot, a presidential candidate in 1992, forewarned the negative consequences when he correctly predicted that NAFTA would "create a great sucking sound of jobs leaving America." Regrettably, we lost millions of jobs due to NAFTA and illegal immigration increased. Trump has recognized both negatives and is renegotiating NAFTA and reaching a tentative understanding with Mexico. He is also working on Canada.
Trump also promised to make America energy independent. I well remember the long gas lines under President Jimmy Carter and have been dismayed that we did not seek energy independence years ago. The Trump administration gave approval to the Keystone XL pipeline, which the Obama administration rejected in 2015. Trump has also opened more areas to drilling for gas and oil.
President Trump also promised to rebuild our military and to defeat the terrorist group ISIS. Peace through strength is still the most effective approach to avoiding wars, and ISIS has been dealt major blows to their growth which had flourished under the Obama administration. Nations headed by one-party control, such as North Korea, China and Russia, only understand military and economic power. Trump is dealing with all three on that basis. Trump has also fulfilled his promise to end the one-sided Iranian Nuclear Agreement, which was so flawed that President Obama knew he could not get it approved as a treaty. Even many Senate Democrats voiced their opposition.
With over two years left in his first term, the wall still needs to be be built on our Southern border. But thus far, Trump, like Horton the elephant, has "meant what I said, and said what I meant!"
