While other area teams fell Friday night, P.K. Yonge is marching on to the regional semifinals.

The Blue Wave overcame a third-quarter deficit and four lead changes to pull out a 36-22 victory over Bradford in the Region 2-4A quarterfinal. First-year coach Marcus McDonald and his team took a celebratory picture underneath the scoreboard after the school’s first playoff game since 2004.

“This is a huge win for the program,” McDonald said. “To be able to do what we did is amazing. They battled their tails off tonight. We made mistakes along the way, and they overcame them. I can’t be more proud of this squad.”

P.K. Yonge jumped out a 7-0 lead on a Isaiah Wilcox’s 36-yard touchdown reception from Carter Kutchko, who completed 20 of 32 pass attempts for 196 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

But Bradford went up 8-7 after a safety and 10-yard touchdown run by Erric Smith. The Blue Wave regained the lead before half on Pernell Sylvester’s 3-yard score.

The teams traded big plays in the third quarter, when Wilcox scored on an 88-yard kickoff and Bradford running back Jeremiah Vaughn responded with a 55-yard touchdown run.

Vaughn had 158 rushing yards on 21 carries, but P.K. Yonge’s Sylvester stole the show in the fourth quarter. His second and third touchdown runs put the game away, and he finished with 105 yards on 22 carries.

“That’s what he does,” McDonald said of Sylvester. "That’s not out of his wheelhouse. He does everything for us and that was a great performance from him.”

The Blue Wave (10-1) will be on the road next week against The Villages, which is ranked No. 1. Branford’s season comes to an end at 5-6, but Tornades coach Brian Tomlinson praised his team’s effort.

“We fought hard,” Tomlinson said. “There’s a lot of people that didn’t even expect us to come close to the playoffs this year because of how young we were. But we made it. The kids are hurt right now, but hopefully in a few weeks they’ll understand. I’m very proud of them. I can’t stress that enough. We just came up short tonight.”
