Faces charges of domestic battery, trespassing

SARASOTA — Sarasota Police Department officer Derrick Gilbert will be placed on paid administrative leave following his arrest in Pinellas County, SPD announced Friday night.

Gilbert, 51, who is assigned to SPD’s Patrol Division, was involved in an incident at approximately 6:30 p.m. Friday at the St. Petersburg-Clearwater Airport. He faces charges of trespassing, domestic battery and battery. The incident is being investigated by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

“We hold our Officers to the highest standard of both professionalism on and off duty,” Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino said in a press release. “I’ve instructed our Internal Affairs Division to conduct a thorough investigation.  We will diligently investigate this incident per our policies.”

Gilbert was suspended in 2012 after he was seen on camera spinning a homeless man face-first into a wall during an arrest. He was later exonerated after an internal investigation found no wrongdoing.
