Doctors Hospital of Sarasota, Englewood Community Hospital and Sarasota Memorial Hospital again receive 'A' grades from Leapfrog Group

The Leapfrog Group released its semiannual hospital safety report cards and gave three Southwest Florida hospitals an 'A' rating.

Doctors Hospital of Sarasota, Englewood Community Hospital and Sarasota Memorial Hospital retained their A grades from last fall, placing them in the top 32 percent of 2,600 hospitals graded.

The nonprofit organization uses 28 measures of public hospital safety data to determine a grade.

“To be recognized nationally as an A hospital is an accomplishment the whole community should take pride in,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, in a press release.

Two area hospitals received B ratings. Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, which earned an A last fall, slipped down to a B. Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte stayed at a B.

Five hospitals were rated C.

Blake Medical Center in Bradenton went to a C from a B. Venice Regional Bayfront Health, Manatee Memorial Hospital, and Bayfront Health Port Charlotte maintained their C rating. Bayfront Health Punta Gorda went up from D to a C.

Leapfrog ranked Florida 17th nationally based on its number of A hospitals among the total number of graded hospitals, with just over 35%. That was up from 19th last fall. Oregon had the highest percentage of A hospitals, at 58%.
