Fall youth basketball league
Registrations is underway for Deltona Parks & Recreation’s co-ed youth basketball league. The league is open to children ages 5 to 12 and all skill levels are welcome.
Games take place between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturdays from Sept. 7 through Oct. 26 in the Wes Crile gymnasium. Practices will be scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
Registration is ongoing until 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31. Registration includes a completed form and $45 payable as cash or check to the staff at Wes Crile Park, 1537 Norbert Terrace, or the Deltona Parks & Recreation Office, City Hall, 2345 Providence Blvd. Players will receive a jersey but should have their own black or dark colored shorts.
Coaches are also needed. Coaches should be at least 18, able to pass a background check and available at least one night a week and Saturday mornings.

Lecture to explore sea squirts and heart disease
Heather Evans Anderson, assistant professor of health science at Stetson University, will discuss sea squirts and their role in treating heart disease at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Marine Discovery Center, 520 Barracuda Blvd., New Smyrna Beach.
She will explain how humans and sea squirts share similar genes and cellular processes. Anderson will focus on the science behind these similarities and how this knowledge can be used to treat human heart disease.
The lecture is free and open to the public; reservations are not required. Seating in the center’s Learning Lab is limited and early arrival is recommended.

GriefShare, a national support program designed to help those grieving the loss of someone close, will begin a 13-week session from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at Central Baptist Church, 152 Fairview Ave., Daytona Beach.
Each session includes a video seminar and group discussion. The program covers a different topic each week and people are invited to join at any time. The program is free but attendees are asked to donate $15 to cover the cost of the workbook.

Historical society to host Pulitzer Prize winner
The West Volusia Historical Society will host “An Evening with Gilbert King” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the Historic Courthouse, 125 W. New York Ave., DeLand.
King, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author best known for “Devil in the Grove,” will discuss his latest book, “Beneath a Ruthless Sun.” He will share his experience delving into two controversial Central Florida legal cases. Ormond Beach attorney and Volusia County Circuit Judge Richard Graham, who obtained justice for the victim in King's latest book, will join the author.
The program is free and doors close at 7 p.m. sharp.
