A Deltona man arrested Tuesday forced a United Kingdom woman into paying him more than $8,000 by threatening to reveal to her husband photos and videos he got from her during an online relationship, deputies said.

Christian George Smith, 37, was charged with threats or extortion and fraudulent use of a credit card. He was in the Volusia County Branch Jail on Tuesday on $25,000 bail.

Detectives suspect there may be other victims extorted by Smith, said Volusia County sheriff's spokeswoman Laura Williams.

Smith, who met the woman online five years ago and had a platonic relationship with her, threatened to send photos and videos she had sent him to the woman's husband, family and employer, according to Williams.

Smith started threatening the woman and extorting money from her — a total of $8,714 — after the woman, who had considered dating Smith, decided not to pursue a relationship with him because she wanted to work on her marriage instead, Williams said.

Smith began threatening and coercing her into paying him large sums of money in exchange for his silence, including paying his child support debt, investigators said.

A week ago the victim, who lives in South Wales, emailed the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office and told detectives that between July 9, 2019, and July 19, 2019, Smith made written threats and recorded video/audio threats, Williams said.

On July 20, the woman told her husband the truth about Smith. That prompted Smith to threaten her husband as well, both in audio recordings and on social media, if she didn’t pay him, Williams said.

Even though she paid Smith, he continued threatening her and contacted the funeral company where she works to file false claims against her, Williams said. Due to those allegations, she was suspended from her job and an internal investigation was started, Williams said.

In addition, on Aug. 3, Smith accessed the woman's credit card and charged more than $2,000 on it, deputies said.

Investigators believe there may be other victims and anyone who may have been involved with Smith is encouraged to contact Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Detective Jayson Paul via email at jpaul@vcso.us.
