Authorities say the woman subjected a child to extreme punishments after the child stole a balloon from a store.

GREENACRES - A second person has been arrested in connection with a recent child abuse case in Greenacres, authorities said.

Shanice Renee Coleman, 31, surrendered herself to authorities on Aug. 1 to face two counts of aggravated child abuse and child neglect. She was released the following day on a $25,000 bond, jail records show.

Selson Otalis, 28, was arrested in July on charges from the same case. As of Tuesday, he remained in custody at the Palm Beach County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Coleman denied the allegations Tuesday while speaking to The Palm Beach Post.

"They’re not true and the truth will definitely be coming out," she said.

Authorities say the couple subjected a child under the age of 13 to excessive punishment after accusing the child of stealing a balloon from a grocery store and being untruthful about it.

The child’s punishment included being forced to sleep outside, eating a diet restricted to oatmeal, tuna fish sandwiches and water and doing numerous exercises while carrying patio bricks, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

Authorities began looking into reports of child abuse in June when the child was admitted to a hospital with numerous injuries.

Coleman acknowledged that she used corporal punishment on the child, but told investigators she had no knowledge of how the child sustained the injuries, according to the arrest report.

A family member who is now caring for the child told The Palm Beach Post Monday that the child is recovering and starting school.
