Ormond Garage Brewing in Ormond Beach opens restaurant and craft brewery on Granada Boulevard themed to Volusia County racing history.

ORMOND BEACH — After hosting back-to-back invitation-only preview parties, the new Ormond Garage Brewing opens its doors to the public on Wednesday, said owner Kevin Wakefield.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better first night,” Wakefield said of Monday’s soft-opening party, the first of two friends-and-family events to mark the opening of the establishment in a century-old historic garage at 48 W. Granada Boulevard. “Everything was fantastic.”

Wakefield, owner and operator of the popular Grind Gastropub and Kona Tiki Bar, said he is pleased with the transformation of the former garage into a brewery and eatery that celebrates Ormond Beach’s history as the “Birthplace of Speed.”

That history will be represented in the brewery’s front window, where customers will be greeted by a replica of the famed 1906 Stanley Steamer Rocket race-car, an artifact on loan from the city of Ormond Beach, Wakefield said.

Other replica racers will be suspended over the bar, part of a decorating scheme that includes walls adorned with historic racing photos from the early 1900s, Wakefield said.

“Racing was really the reason for the rise of Ormond Beach and this place is really a celebration of that history,” Wakefield said. “I did more research than I did conceptualizing.”

The fare will feature craft beers brewed on site as well as a full food menu, said Wakefield, who also owns and operates the 31 Supper Club, just east on Granada.

Wakefield and the restaurant’s new general manager, Wes Lemoyne, have hired a full staff of roughly 20 employees, but remain on the look-out for potential new team members, Wakefield said.

Ormond Garage Brewing will open daily at 11 a.m., although Wakefield expects to open doors a bit later than that on Wednesday, he said. “We’re going to let business dictate our closing time for a while, but we expect to be open at least until 11 p.m. daily,” he said.
