TAVARES — The UF/IFAS Extension in Lake County will offer a variety of educational programs for the public this month.

Family and Consumer Sciences Agent Mia Wilchcombe will teach a diabetes class from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Umatilla Public Library. This free program will focus on healthy eating and proper nutrition for people diagnosed with diabetes and pre-diabetes. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required at fcslake.eventbrite.com or 352-343-4101.

On Saturday, Residential Horticulture Agent Brooke Moffis will present a talk on building back yard habitats at 10 a.m. at the extension office. Participants will develop strategies for attracting butterflies, birds, bats and bees to their yards. Registration is required at lakegardeningprograms.eventbrite.com for $5 or $6 at the door.

The Discovery Gardens, a 5-acre demonstration garden adjacent to the extension office will be open the same day as part of the monthly Saturday in the Gardens program. Discovery Gardens is also open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is an ideal venue to take a walk, enjoy a picnic and get gardening ideas.

The Lake County 4-H program will kick off its new year with an open house Aug. 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Discovery Gardens. Participating families will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with some animals, create recycled art and enjoy a fun scavenger hunt. 4-H is open to all children ages 5 to 18.

In addition to offering classes, UF/IFAS Lake County Extension is home to experts in nutrition, agriculture, gardening and youth development who are able to answer questions with research-based solutions. Consultations are offered free of charge by appointment year-round.
