A Ring video helped New Smyrna Beach police nab a man accused of stealing a package off a porch.

A security camera recorded a man snatching a package off a porch and New Smyrna Beach police helped track down the man who still had the stolen packages in the front seat of his car, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Thomas Coleman, 27, of New Smyrna Beach, was arrested Wednesday by New Smyrna Beach police. Coleman was charged with burglary of an unoccupied dwelling and was being held at the Volusia County Branch Jail on $5,000 bail.

The owner did not report the package theft to police but did post a crime alert to the neighborhood portal with a Ring video of the theft. That triggered an email notification from Ring to the Volusia County Crime Center, where an analyst saw the video and recognized the suspect from an earlier police bulletin from similar cases, the Sheriff’s Office said.

New Smyrna Beach Police found Coleman’s car parked at Walmart on State Road 44 in New Smyrna Beach on Wednesday, the Sheriff's Office said. They found the stolen packages in plain view on the front seat. And they soon found Coleman leaving a restroom inside the Walmart and arrested him.
