The 14-year-old driver was arrested after a brief chase.

A teenager was arrested after he stole a car that was left running at a gas station and led authorities on a brief chase Tuesday night, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office says.

According to the Sheriff's Office, a man left his car running while he entered the Wawa at 2509 Cortez Road W. in Bradenton at about 10 p.m. When he left the store he saw his car being driven away and reported the vehicle stolen.

About 50 minutes later a deputy found the vehicle and began to follow it while a Sheriff's Office helicopter was dispatched. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle at U.S. 301 and 53rd Avenue East, but the vehicle refused to stop. Deputies backed off when the vehicle fled west onto 53rd Avenue East with a top speed of 55 mph. The helicopter followed the vehicle from the air.

The stolen car was parked in the 600 bock of 21st Street East and the driver ran away but was arrested by deputies.

The car thief was identified as a 14-year-old and taken to the Manatee Juvenile Detention Center, where he faces charges of theft of a motor vehicle, fleeing to elude and driving without a license.
