On Tuesday, deputies were alerted just after 7 p.m. of a carjacking in the 6300 block of North Lockwood Ridge in Sarasota. The victim, a 71-year-old who has a cast on her leg, told police she was forced into her vehicle by the suspect, who threatened her with a gun. The victim drove the suspect to a nearby parking lot where he took several of her credit cards, a cellphone and her Cadillac.

Investigators were able to track the credit card taken from the victim to a Walmart and a gas station only minutes after the carjacking. Security video led to Sparrow's identification.

He is being held under temporary detention for mental health evaluation under the Baker Act.
