Southwest Florida endured a devastating red tide bloom last year that fouled waterways, killed sea life and hurt the economy.

Studying red tide has long been a focus for Mote. The Sarasota marine research lab has worked to enhance those efforts after the recent bloom, securing funding from the state to research ways to mitigate the impacts of red tide.

The latest research grant was announced by U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, who has worked to secure more federal funding to study harmful algae blooms.
