Several local businesses shared the spotlight recently with repeat wins in the 2019 Bold City Best voting competition, conducted by the Florida Times-Union and Jacksonville.com. One of them, SEDA New Homes, pulled off a quadruple whammy, garnering a win as Best Local Home Builder for the fourth year in a row.

The category recognizes companies that build exclusively in Duval, St. Johns, Clay, Nassau, Baker or Flagler counties.

“We are so honored to have won this prestigious award,” said Linda Semanik, vice president of sales at SEDA New Homes. “We appreciate our SEDA family of homeowners and all who took the time to vote for us.”

SEDA, one of Jacksonville’s largest locally owned homebuilders, was among 173 winners who took home honors at the awards party held Oct. 9 at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront. More than 182,000 votes were tabulated for the three-phase competition that began in June with nominations of businesses in eight primary categories.

Also earning honors was Mr. Handyman Serving Greater Jacksonville, which was named Best Home Remodeling Company and Best Handyman Service. Owners Mike and Libby McCalley are also no strangers to the honor, having placed as a finalist each year since 2016, winning that year and in 2017. This is the first time the company has won in two categories.

“There are other ‘best of Jax’ type contests, but the Bold City Best contest is the premier such contest in Jax. I know a lot of other business owners locally and this is something that is on everyone’s radar reach year,” said McCalley. “It’s well-advertised, draws a lot of reader participation, and when we tell consumers we won the Bold City Best, most people know what that is.”

Established in 1982, SEDA now builds in communities throughout the First Coast, and also has a division dedicated to building one of its custom plans on a privately owned personal lot.

“Our focus is on quality. We have the most outstanding professionals in the industry with decades of experience, which allows us to deliver quality homes and have the best warranty record in Jacksonville,” Semanik said. “Not only does this experience mean that we have a superior product, it also allows us to make smart decisions so that we can pass the savings on to our customers.”

McCalley added that his company’s history of repeat wins serves as a confirmation that they are doing something right.

“When folks complain about getting work done in Jax, we hear a lot of the same complaints over and over. Service providers are hard to reach, don’t return calls, don’t show up on time and don’t call, they don’t clean up and so on,” McCalley said. “We’ve designed this business from the ground up to be the antidote to these complaints. Winning in two categories really is an honor, and it validates our approach to providing service.”
