GORUCK hosts second annual Star Course event in Jax Beach

On Friday, Nov. 15, the GORUCK 50-miler Star Course, the first rucking ultramarathon of its kind, will challenge hundreds of people to complete a large-scale, team scavenger hunt in 20 hours or less. GORUCK, a veteran-owned-and-operated gear company, hosts roughly 1,000 events per year and the Star Course is one of the largest.

Teams of two to five will begin their Star Course at GORUCK’s Jacksonville Beach headquarters, located at 415 Pablo Ave. There, a GORUCK Cadre issues each team a map and list of waypoints, including some of Jacksonville’s best sites. Each team works together to choose their individual route, which must be completed in a specified amount of time.

Star Course distances range from 3.1 miles to 50 miles. Since rucking, or carrying weight on your back, is essential to Special Forces training and one of GoRuck’s event pillars, the Star Course requires participants, regardless of the distance they’re covering, to do exactly that. Weight requirement varies by weight of individual: Those weighing more than 150 carry a 20-pound pack, while those weighing less than 150 must carry a 10-pound pack.

Unlike other GORUCK Challenges, the Star Course does not include physical training exercises. It is simply rucking — walking with purpose and weight on your back. Participants are required to ruck their route as a team and hit all the waypoints before the designated time hack.

Cadre and support teams will meet up with teams along the way for water and food resupplies, but they cannot assist any team’s movement. At each waypoint, teams will be instructed to post a selfie via text message as proof of covering the required distance.

Registrants for the 50-miler Star Course also have the opportunity to qualify to compete in GORUCK’s inaugural Rucking World Championships, scheduled for November 2020 in Washington, D.C.

"The Star Course was inspired by an executive order issued by Teddy Roosevelt in 1908," said Jason McCarthy, co-founder of GORUCK. "He told members of the military to march 50 miles in under 20 hours and at GORUCK, we believe there are people out there starving for a similar challenge and for a way to push themselves to new limits, which is why we created the Star Course."

Emily McCarthy is the co-founder of GORUCK and head of travel. Prior to GORUCK, she served as a case officer in the CIA.

"This event is disrupting the event space by combining physical stamina with teamwork and on-the-ground problem solving," said McCarthy. "We are thrilled to be hosting the Star Course in our hometown and GORUCK headquarters and are grateful for the community’s support."

GORUCK’s Star Course event will take place over a two-day period. Participants in the 50-miler will report to GORUCK headquarters on Friday, Nov. 15 at 9 p.m., while individuals participating in other distances will kick off on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the following times:

26.2-miler: 6 a.m.

12-miler: Noon

15K: 1:30 p.m.

10K: 2 p.m.

Individuals are required to register prior to the event, as well as form their own teams of 2-5. Pricing ranges from $25 to $145, depending on the distance of the course.
