VENICE — A Venice man is in custody following a struggle early Saturday with a Venice police officer in which shots were fired, Venice police said.

Kevin Hamilton, 24, was being chased in his car by a police officer, stopped on the 400 block of Menendez Street, and ran away, according to police. The officer followed, and the two "had a scuffle," Venice Police Chief Tom Mattmuller told SNN.

In the midst of the altercation, the Venice officer’s weapon was shot, but Hamilton was not injured, according to Mattmuller. The shooting occurred just after 5:15 a.m. The suspect ran from the scene again, and was chased to an apartment on the 400 block of Armada Avenue.

The Venice police set up a perimeter, and Hamilton surrendered at 9:35 a.m, according to police.

The officer, who has not been identified, was treated at Venice hospital for minor scrapes and bruises and returned to duty later that day.

Hamilton was arrested by the Venice Police Department on four charges: battery on an officer, resisting an officer with violence, fleeing police with disregard to safety, and driving with a suspended license. He is being held at the Sarasota County jail, and no bail is set for the charge of battery on an officer.
