We went through Hurricane Dorian and just recently a tornado went through Lakeland. What can we do better? For hurricane season we can keep a spare canister of propane at all times, which will prevent shortages. Stores ran out of propane several times before Dorian arrived. We can buy uninterruptable power supply, which will keep our electronics running during outages. We can also buy rechargeable batteries.
I have a hand pull emergency generator and hand crank generators are available. In my car trunk I have an emergency solar panel. Reflecting sunlight on a solar panel increases power produced.
To reduce power consumption of air conditioning, we can look at increasing the power of bathroom vent fan. The faster the hot, humid air is removed the less we use the air conditioner, and a fan uses a fraction of electricity as an air conditioner. LED lamps reduce our electric bill.
We can vote for candidates who support alternative transportation, such as tax credit for electric bicycles. I believe we should consider improving bus service in Polk County - every passenger on a bus is one less car on the road.
