Extension offers homebuyer classes


The University of Florida/Volusia County Extension will present classes to help potential homebuyers prepare to purchase a house. Extension Agent Lisa Hamilton, a HUD-certified housing counselor and accredited financial counselor, will instruct the classes at the Volusia County Agricultural Center, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 6, April 25, May 22 and June 20. The April 25 session will be offered in English and Spanish.


Participants will receive a certificate of completion that will enable them to apply for a federal down payment and closing cost assistance program available through Volusia County, Seminole County and the City of Deltona. The cost is $10 for an individual or a couple that will be sharing a book. Scholarships are available for households below 50% of the area median income. Lunch will be provided.

Bike Week at the Lighthouse


Ponce DeLeon Inlet Lighthouse, 4931 S. Peninsula Drive Ponce Inlet, will host a Bike Week event from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 6 through 8 and 12 through 14. View the photographic history of motorcycle races on the beach. Talk with the old lighthouse keeper and examine artifacts from long ago before exploring the lighthouse and nautical-themed gift shop. Special activities, included with regular admission, will take place from noon to 2 p.m. For information, visit ponceinlet.org.


John Denver tribute concert


The Volusia Music Club will host A Tribute to John Denver by Ron Rich from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at The First Congregational Church, UCC Fellowship Hall, 259 W. County plans spring break camps


Children can enjoy group activities and field trips with Volusia County’s spring break camps, which are being offered from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. March 16 through 20 at Robert Strickland Park, 1670 Strickland Range Road, Daytona Beach; and Gemini Springs Park, 37 Dirksen Drive, DeBary.


Advance registration and payment are required. The $65 fee at each site includes playground activities, arts and crafts, and field trips.


The camp at Robert Strickland Park is open to children ages 6 to 12. Parents can register their children from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, March 7 and 14, at the park’s recreation center. For information, contact David Hinson at dhinson@volusia.org or 386-527-5213.
