A Lake Wales man was hit by a truck and killed as he tried to cross State Road 60 on foot Tuesday night, according to the Lake Wales Police Department.

George Hillis, 61, was crossing SR 60 at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard around 7:50 p.m. when a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado being driven by Jennifer Bews, 40, of Haines City, struck him, LWPD Sgt. Shawn Smith said in a news release Wednesday.

Hillis had crossed the eastbound lanes onto the concrete median and was beginning to cross the westbound lanes when he was struck, Smith said.

Bews told police she saw Hillis at the last minute and swerved to the right to avoid hitting him, but she struck him with the right front of her vehicle.

Hillis sustained life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center for treatment, where he later died, Smith said.

Westbound lanes of SR 60 were shut down for about two hours while the crash was being investigated.

Anyone in the community who has information regarding the crash is asked to call LWPD Officer Rocky Meyers at 863-678-4223.
