Mason Chapman, 24, of Lake Wales, was driving north at a high rate of speed on his red 2013 Yamaha motorcycle when a southbound grey 2018 Honda Pilot turned in front of him at the entrance to the Save-A-Lot in Frostproof.

FROSTPROOF — A Lake Wales motorcyclist died in a two-vehicle crash on Scenic Highway north of County Road 630 in Frostproof on Wednesday morning.

Mason Chapman, 24, was driving north at a high rate of speed on his red 2013 Yamaha motorcycle when a southbound grey 2018 Honda Pilot driven by 73-year-old Barbara Brown of Frostproof turned left into the entrance to the Save-A-Lot, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said that the approaching motorcycle attempted to brake and left 50 feet of skid marks before striking the Pilot on the rear passenger side.

Chapman was ejected from the bike, and his body went into the back seat of the Pilot, according to the Sheriff's Office. He was wearing a helmet but was declared dead at the scene.

The PCSO reports that Brown and her 63-year-old husband, Larry, were wearing their seatbelts. They were transported to a Sebring hospital to be checked for minor injuries.

According to a PCSO media release issued Thursday, it appears that Brown violated the bike's right-of-way but that the bike was traveling at a high rate of speed, which contributed to the crash.

The investigation is ongoing. The roadway was closed for about four hours.
