A female victim died after a shooting in downtown Gainesville early Friday morning, though Gainesville police offered few details.

In social media posts Friday afternoon, police officials wrote that the agency is investigating a shooting that happened about 2 a.m. in the first block of Northwest First Street downtown.

Two groups of people got into a fight at a downtown club and followed each other outside where shots were fired, a Gainesville Police Department Facebook post said.

Chief Inspector Jorge Campos said detectives insisted that no other information be released, including whether any arrests had been made or how many people might have been injured.

State Attorney Bill Cervone, whose office is near where the shooting occurred, said a "female victim" died from her injuries, but did not know more.
