Sheriff’s deputies and other first responders converged on the lake when the boy was reported missing shortly before 8 p.m.

Sheriff’s Office Col. Joseph Wells said the boy might have been in the water about 20 minutes before he was found by first responders, reported First Coast News, the Times-Union news partner.

Wells also said the boy's family told deputies they had lost sight of him, and were unsure whether he'd gotten out of the lake or went under the water, so they called for help, according to First Coast News.

The boy passed away at the hospital, the Sheriff’s Office said about 10:30 p.m. on Facebook.

The Sheriff’s Office and Florida Department of Children and Families are investigating the death.
