According to the Florida Department of Health’s Sunday coronavirus report, five more Sumter residents have contracted the virus for a total of 226 cases, while Lake’s count stands at 234.

LEESBURG — Sumter County’s coronavirus case count rose by five Sunday from Saturday.

According to the Florida Department of Health’s Sunday coronavirus report, five more Sumter residents have contracted the virus for a total of 226 cases, while Lake’s count stands at 234.

No new local deaths were reported. Lake’s death count stands at 13 and Sumter’s is at 14.

The latest local deaths recorded were reported Friday. A 75-year-old Sumter man who had traveled to Panama died and so did a 77-year-old Lake man who had not traveled and did not report having contact with an infected person.

The virus can be spread not only via human-to-human contact, but can also be spread from coming into contact with contaminated surfaces.

Included in Sumter’s case count are results from the Sumter Correctional Institution in Bushnell. As of Saturday, 92 inmates had tested positive for COVID-19, along with nine staff members, according to the Florida Department of Corrections coronavirus report.

Unlike other states, Florida does not report “probable” deaths from coronavirus. Every death listed comes with a date on which the person’s COVID-19 test came back positive.

The state also has not released how many infected people have recovered from the virus, though experts say that most who contract it will recover without special care.

Here are the newest reported cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Sumter County. Unless noted, all remain under investigation.

A 65-year-old man.
A 49-year-old man.
A 59-year-old man.
