The Jewish Community Alliance celebrates its 30th anniversary on Aug. 28.

And what a wonderful community cornerstone it has become.

"Each day," noted the Jacksonville Jewish News, "hundreds of people from diverse backgrounds walk through the doors of the JCA to enhance body, mind and spirit."

Times-Union Editorial Page Editor Mike Clark recently discussed public affairs with JCA members during an evening gathering; he came away impressed and inspired by their great insights and questions.

Among the JCA's many offerings are:

● After school programs, summer camp and “JCAtion Days.”

● Arts and culture events.

● Family activities.

● Health and wellness initiatives.

Here's hoping for many more years of success for the Jewish Community Alliance!

Beaches Community Fund makes impact

Cheers to The Beaches Community Fund for making a huge impact on the lives of economically challenged families and children in Mayport and surrounding communities.

The community fund is fueled by a giving circle of about 36 civic-minded families in the Beaches area. Recently, the fund distributed more than $315,000 in grants to support Beaches-area nonprofits that provide social services to residents in need. That’s an amazing display of generosity given that The Beaches Community Fund was created just four years ago.

Volunteer award for deserving UNF grad

Congratulations to new University of North Florida graduate Jessica Suckow for receiving UNF’s Senior Service Award for her outstanding volunteer work.

Suckow was presented with the award as part of UNF's recent summer commencement ceremony, during which she also received her degree in nursing.

As a UNF student, Suckow did tireless work as a nursing mentor, volunteer at area elementary schools and senior facilities and fundraiser for UNF’s Student Nurses’ Association breast cancer charity.

And that was just some of her volunteer work.

Suckow did all of this as a wife and mother — and while maintaining a 3.82 grade point average as a full-time UNF student.

A scoop for the Northeast Florida Conservatory

Bravo to the Northeast Florida Conservatory for winning rave reviews for its recent production of “Newsies — The Broadway Musical,” a wonderful and affectionate ode to newspapers in America.

The limited-run production drew sellout crowds, and it featured a small orchestra and great choreography.

Now more than ever, it’s vital to promote the important role that newspapers play in our country and in our democracy — and “Newsies” does a fantastic job of doing just that.

Let’s also applaud Preston Haskell, the legendary Jacksonville philanthropist and founder of the Haskell Co., for sponsoring the local conservatory's production of "Newsies."
