I join Gene Conrad in ecstasy over an initiative to bring a major airline to Lakeland, although my scope is much more limited than that expressed by Mayor Bill Mutz.

I would be happy with one flight a day to Atlanta or Miami, so that one could buy a ticket from Lakeland to London, fly out, change planes and not have to make any more complicated travel arrangements. Three flights a day would be even more heavenly!

Driving passengers from Lakeland to Sanford can take longer than the flight they catch. I am angling for American, Delta or Southwest, because budget airlines might put us on a footing with Clearwater and Sanford, but really, flying to Ogdensburg, Elmira or Albany has limited appeal, and little facility to connect to other destinations.

As a 10-year resident, I have told everyone who has any contact with economic development that this is a vital objective. Let's make it happen.
