• I’m calling in reference to the question in Sunday’s paper: “What can we do about the horrific accidents on I-75 going through Gainesville?” One way to stop this from happening anymore is to lower the speed limit going through Gainesville. There’s a lot of people who use I-75 to try and get around the traffic in Gainesville, and the trucks come barreling down on you as you’re entering these exits. They don’t slow down, and they expect you just to speed up and get out of their way. If you were to lower the speed limit to 60 mph going through Gainesville, that would slow everyone down and it would give a chance for these people to not get hit by these mega-ton trucks that think they own the road.

• They gave the Notre Dame football coach the coach of the year Award. But if you’re a Gator fan, you know who really was the coach of the year — period.

 • I suggest another use for these disposable plastic grocery bags: A person can put them over their head while they drive or walk around town. Then they will not see the plastic bags cartwheeling in the wind across our streets, caught in trees and bushes and clogging our drainage ditches. To the people who need these free plastic bags to dispose of their cat litter, you can go buy a bag. It’s part of taking care of your needs by yourself and not expecting to get a freebie that you can use for other things. These plastic bags are not useful for much more than taking your groceries home, and there are paper bags. You can bring your own bag.

• With all the road equipment that has been down 43rd Street near 441, can we please have 93rd Avenue repaved? It is unbelievably potholed. There are a lot of people who use that road. Please get it paved.

• I just read the article in today’s (Jan. 5) Gainesville Sun about age discrimination. I was refused an earned income tax credit because I was over the age of 66. That is pure age discrimination by the government. I earned it, I should get that credit. It was $500 that I needed desperately. We’ve got to get rid of age discrimination.

• This shutdown is costing the country monetarily and emotionally, and it is all because of Trump. Immigrants from the southern border aren’t a security problem. Cyber security and worsening global warming are security problems.

• Nancy Pelosi says that border walls are not effective. But if that’s the case, why would 62 countries have built such walls since 1990?

• So many of our national parks are overrun with people and suffer wear and tear from too many people going through the trails and parks, etc. So I’m very surprised that environmentalists don’t cheer the shutdown of national parks temporarily during the government shutdown because it gives the parks a chance to recover from high foot traffic.

• What … (some people) pejoratively refer to as isolationism, I prefer to call non-interventionism. Our interventionist foreign policy in Iraq and Libya has made a mess of the Middle East and contributed to Europe’s refugee crisis. Isolationism didn’t inhibit us from preventing 9/11, but our interventionist foreign policy contributed to it.
