A black-face memory. Socialism is the road to ruin.

Black face in his past

The Butler, Pennsylvania, Rotary Club was my father’s favorite local membership. Aside from business pursuits, he joyfully played piano for their occasions and joined right in with their curricula.

One of the organization’s entertainments was the minstrel show, and it was the first experience for me as Mom and I took our seats halfway down the high school auditorium with myself in an aisle seat. Anyway, when the black-faced participants walked through the theater to the stage, one of them gripped my shoulder as he passed by and, to my complete surprise, it was darkened Dad done up and on his way to perform with the rest. His assuming the burnt-cork appearance seemed to this young man — at the time — a simple entertainment/amusement no different than, say, a Halloween get-up.

Such a ritual was considered inoffensive among white people with the likes of Roosevelt, Wilson, Hoover and Reagan present among many audiences of their time. Years later, I did wonder what Al Jolson was trying to do blacking up to sing “Mammy”. I suppose offended blacks could have done white-faced parodies for their own amusement.

The period was Jim Crow from 1889 to the 1950’s. “Darkies” were depicted as bumbling, stupid, obsequious caricatures being taught inferiority.

Ah, but my other memory of those days was that of Dave Rosenblum personally taking articles of clothing to the African-American gentleman who was the factotum greeting and escorting patrons at a local hotel.

Road to ruin

Regarding the letters “Government control” and “Liberal Ocala” in the Thursday’s paper, I must say I agree with both writers. What they both say takes me back to the Bible.

The Devil took Jesus up on the mountain and tempted Him. Promised Jesus the world if He would do what the devil said. Americans, think before you believe and fall for everything “free.” Where will all the money come from?

The Democrats promise free Medicare for All, and in doing so, people who pay for their Medicare will no longer be able to have it, even though they may have the money. It will be taken away from them. Are you telling me that the politicians will be among this so-called Medicare For All? This, you know, is bull.

The Democrats are trying to make our great America a socialist country. We would no longer have a voice. We will be like animals led to slaughter. We will no longer be free.

God Bless America and guide the American people to open their eyes.

Barbara Tucker, Ocala

The UK’s mistake

Dear cousins across the pond:

By not being able to agree upon a “plan” to get out of the European Union, one wonders whether or not the United Kingdom may really wish to get out.

The creation of the European Union was such a step in the right direction, conforming to the reality of the world getting smaller and smaller pointing towards one world. This would be a world of one government with one police force to maintain the peace. We have the mechanism.

Why can’t the nations of the world see it? Only the United Nations, if we all support it, can prevent a greater disaster than was World War II.

So what if we all have to give up a degree of authority.

Incredible coach

The University of Florida men’s track team won the National Indoor Men’s Track Championship coached by an incredible man, Mike Holloway (“Mouse” to those of us who know and respect him).

During Holloway’s tenure, he has won five national indoor championships and four outdoor men’s championships. He also coaches the women’s team, who have won several SEC and national championships.

Holloway coached our son many years ago. He is kind, caring and desires to develop young men and women to become the best they can be as a person, long before he ever tries to mold them into world-class athletes. UF is fortunate to have such an individual coaching these teams.

As a state we are fortunate to have someone like Holloway in our midst. Congratulations for a great indoor season. Now let’s bring home an outdoor championship again this season. Go Gators!
