In a guest op-ed a local Jewish reader reminds President Trump of what Judaism stands for.

Despite having a Jewish son-in-law and a daughter who is a Jew by choice, President Donald Trump’s recent remarks that Jews who support Democratic Party candidates for office (and not him) are “disloyal” (to the U.S. and Israel) reveal him to be clueless about what Judaism stands for.

President Trump appears bewildered why more Jews don’t support him after he moved the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, voiced his support for Israel annexing the Golan Heights and condemned two U.S. congresswomen for their anti-Semitic and anti-Israel comments.

I am bewildered why any Jew with any knowledge of Torah, Talmud and Jewish ethics would back him. Discerning Jewish voters will see Trump’s support of Israel as cunning, no-risk public relations tactics to ingratiate himself to the Jewish community. Those actions did nothing to insure Israel’s survival or change the status quo.

On the other hand, Trump has broken and trampled every ethic, moral and value that Judaism holds dear: loving your neighbor, welcoming the stranger, being honest in business, paying laborers in a timely fashion, not gossiping about others, and so many more.

Far from adhering to Judaism’s principles of “Tikkun Olam” – repairing the world – and “Or L’goyim” – serving as “a light among the nations,” Trump has done the opposite – dividing, insulting, demeaning and bullying.

Jewish Trump supporters have sold their souls for short-term political gain, sacrificing what in the long run make us a compassionate, civil, law-abiding society.

How can any Jew or anyone of good conscience vote for this man again?
