Taking it seriously

First of all, a heartfelt thanks to the first responders, health care workers and local government officials whose selfless efforts have made Alachua County one of the safer Florida counties.

Of course, you’ll find small protests, such as those who stood next to City Hall waving their “Don’t Tread on Me” flags and their anti-vax conspiracy theory signs. They protested for the freedom to go selfishly out and infect themselves, you, me, our loved ones and two men minding their own business on a nearby bench just waiting for a bus.

With a large and mobile population centered around the University of Florida and Shands hospital, Gainesville might have been a COVID-19 epicenter. That we have achieved a far lower infection and death rate than even nearby Sumter County, home to The Villages retirement community, is a testament to how our leaders and the vast majority of Alachua County residents have taken this crisis seriously and responded appropriately. Well done.

Irrational fear

Our County Commission has decided to go above and beyond the governor's guidelines. And why? Because we have been as impacted by COVID-19 as areas like Miami? Because we lack hospital capacity? Nope. Neither one of those. We've had fewer than 10 deaths in a county of nearly 300,000.

So why, then? Because for the life of me, I can't figure it out. There's no scientific proof that cloth masks prevent the spread of the virus, yet we're supposed to wear them.

And small businesses? Well, let them eat cake. Because for some crazy reason, we'd rather surrender to irrational fear.

I hope voters remember this.

Flawed suit

Brian Kramer's suit to remove Beverly McCallum from the state attorney's race has no merit. An attorney suspended for less than 90 days from the Florida Bar remains a Bar member. Only after a 90-day suspension is the attorney removed from the Bar and has to reapply for admission.

The Florida Constitution, Article V, section 17, states a state attorney shall be a Bar member the previous five years. The suspension does not remove you from the Bar until you have been suspended 90 days or more.

So, in fact, McCallum remained a member of the bar as her suspension was for 15 days. Her suspension was not for a criminal act, not for poor representation of a client, but for questioning the integrity of a judge.

It sounds like someone doesn't want a race to be about qualifications and platforms. The voters should decide, not a flawed suit.

Pure fantasy

Why does Donald Trump keep doing this? As if we don’t have enough problems with China already, he picks a fight based on pure fantasy. Trump has decided, based only on a hunch, that China deliberately made the coronavirus in a lab and released it.

Even though our intelligence agencies have ruled out the virus being man-made, and our scientific community agrees that it came from an infected animal, Trump has decided he knows better than everybody in the world.

So, he speculates that China did this on purpose and he blurts it out to the whole world as if it were a fact. The man is incapable of keeping his mouth shut. So, we have a new fight with China, and here in America where Chinese restaurants are already closing due to threats because the pandemic started in Wuhan, Trump has unnecessarily stirred up even more racism and hatred.
