LAKELAND — Most of the first game was played before rain wiped out Thursday’s first day of play in the NCAA Division II South Regional Baseball tournament at Henley Field.

Delta State led Mississippi College, 13-2, in the seventh inning when rain flooded the field early Thursday afternoon, postponing the rest of that game and two games that were scheduled to follow.

Three more games had been scheduled for Friday in the double-elimination tournament, including Florida Southern’s game against the winner of one of Thursday’s scheduled games. That game was originally scheduled to start at 3 p.m. But since all games must be played in a scheduled sequence, the starting times for all games had to be rescheduled after the rainouts.

Tournament officials hoped to continue the tournament Friday morning.

The two games that were completely rained out Thursday pitted Tampa against Albany St., which was scheduled for 3 p.m., and Nova Southeastern against Montevallo, scheduled for 7 p.m.

The winner of the seven-team regional tournament will qualify for the Division II National Championship tournament to be played May 26-June 2 at Cary, N.C.
