The only pitch at the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp's game Sunday was dropped by a giant dog.
The next drops came from the clouds, washing out the Jumbo Shrimp's series finale against the Southern League's Mississippi Braves at the Baseball Grounds.
Lightning flashed and the tarp rolled out moments after the ceremonial pregame first pitch skittered off the glove of Southpaw, the franchise's mascot from Jacksonville Suns days. After a 90-minute wait through constant lightning and growing showers, the team called the game at 4:32 p.m.
No makeup date has been announced, but the teams could make up the postponement at some point during their season-ending series in Jacksonville from Aug. 30-Sept. 3.
The Jumbo Shrimp and Braves (25-23, 54-64 second half) split the series at two games apiece.
After an off day, the Jumbo Shrimp (19-29, 47-69) travel Tuesday to begin a five-game set at the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Max Duval (2-11, 7.46) or Merandy Gonzalez (3-6, 4.32) will be scheduled to start against Seth Varner (7-2, 3.01) of the first-place Blue Wahoos.
