Several members of the North Marion High School Cheer Team will be heading across the pond come 2020, with the opportunity to cheer in the New Year’s Day Parade in London.

The opportunity came after the Colts attended the UCA (Universal Cheerleaders Association) Cheer Camp at Embry-Riddle University in July. There, the cheerleaders spent three days learning new cheers, chants, band dances and routines.

While there, many of the girls competed in try-outs in front of the UCA judges, performing one of their new routines, a cheer and a jump. Five of the members of the Colts’ cheer team, Kearstyn Barrett, Ashley Carbajal, Bella Shine, Erica Manning, and Emily McDuffie, were selected as All-American Cheerleaders and given the chance to cheer in the parade.

Cheerleaders are selected for this opportunity from cheer camps across the country, but only the top 12 percent of athletes who attend the camps earn the chance to perform.

North Marion has had the opportunity to participate in this parade in the past, including former North Marion cheerleader, and current head cheer coach, Monica Roberts, in 2009.

Four of the cheerleaders have accepted the opportunity to participate in the parade and are each in the process of raising $4000 for the expenses.

Anybody interested in donating to help the cheer team can contact North Marion and ask for Roberts.
