The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp announced their promotional schedule for the 2020 Southern League baseball season, including hot air balloons, Hanukkah in July and underwear from the sky.
Maybe it’s a good thing that Giancarlo Stanton no longer plays his baseball on the First Coast.
If he did, the slugger’s sky-high home runs might mean big trouble for a few Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fans on April 17.
That’s the night when the Jumbo Shrimp will celebrate Best Seat (Over) The House Night, among the wackiest in a season of offbeat promotions for the Double-A Southern League baseball club.
Six fans on that date will be selected to watch an inning of the Jumbo Shrimp’s game from a hot air balloon floating above 121 Financial Ballpark.
It’s a promotion that gives new meaning to the term "fly ball."
The balloon-aided promotion isn’t the only one to employ an aerial aid: On June 21, a helicopter is scheduled to drop hundreds of boxer shorts before the game in a drive to raise awareness for prostate cancer, termed Dropping Our Drawers on Father’s Day.
Also on the agenda include events ranging from Long Live the Cozy Coupe Night on June 5 to Comic Hero Weekend on May 2-3 to National Drive-Thru Day on July 24, when fans will pass through each inning to pick up food from right field.
The club has also scheduled Vice Night on July 25, when the Jumbo Shrimp will wear special Vice Duuuval jerseys to be auctioned off during the fifth inning.
Other events on the schedule include Ray Charles Bobblehead Night on May 12, a Hanukkah in July promotion on July 2, the traditional Big Splash Day on July 14, the invasion of hundreds of pink lawn flamingos on May 24, and 22 nights with postgame fireworks displays.
